BMW X5 Paint Correction & Ceramic Coating Case Study | Darwin NT

Restoring A Black BMW X5 M60i To Better Than Brand New

A behind-the-scenes look at the full paint correction, ceramic coating, and vehicle preservation package completed by Dents-B-Gone in Darwin NT.

THE PROBLEM

When “Brand New” Isn’t Actually Brand New

At first glance, this black BMW X5 M60i looked exactly how you’d expect a near-new luxury vehicle to look. Glossy, clean, and impressive.

But the moment it entered our workshop and came under proper inspection lighting, a very different story began to reveal itself. Despite only around 5,000km on the clock – and a ceramic coating already applied by the dealership – the paintwork was affected by light marring, poor clarity, and an inconsistent finish across multiple panels.

For most people, these imperfections would go unnoticed. But for an owner who had invested heavily in a premium performance SUV and planned to keep it long-term, they were impossible to ignore. That’s where our team stepped in.

Client goals

A Proper Reset For A Long-Term Vehicle

This client had previously trusted us with Paintless Dent Repair on another vehicle, so they already understood our approach to preservation and craftsmanship.

After buying this X5 M60i as a dealership demo, they noticed the paint lacked the deep clarity you’d expect from a high-end black finish. The dealership-applied coating was still performing, but during our wash and decontamination it became obvious the preparation underneath simply hadn’t been completed to the standard the vehicle deserved.

Light wash marring ran throughout the paint, and one section of the roof had been missed entirely during the original coating. Their goal wasn’t just to “coat” the car again – they wanted it properly reset and refined to the level it should have been delivered in.

The process

The Correction & Protection Process

Over approximately 36 man-hours, our team carried out a complete paint correction and protection package, designed to bring the vehicle as close to perfect as possible while preserving the integrity of the original factory finish. The process included:

Full decontamination wash

Iron removal treatment

Clay bar decontamination

Multi-stage paint correction and refinement

Wheel removal, polishing, and ceramic coating

Ceramic Coating Treatment to Exterior Paintwork

Ceramic Glass Coating treatment

Interior leather, fabric, and trim protection

Every surface was carefully cleaned, refined, corrected, and protected – because black paint, especially on a luxury performance vehicle, leaves absolutely nowhere to hide.

The DBG philosophy

A ceramic coating can only ever preserve the condition of the surface beneath it. The true craftsmanship lies in the preparation – inspecting, correcting, and refining the paint so the coating seals a finish that already looks exceptional, rather than locking flaws in place. For this X5 M60i, that preparation was the foundation of the entire transformation.

The Final Result

Under workshop lighting, the paint now shows the deep clarity, sharp reflections, and richness expected of a premium black BMW finish. Outside in natural sunlight, it comes alive even further – the haze and flatness replaced with depth, gloss, and a far more refined finish than the day it arrived.

This was never about making the car simply look “shiny.” It was about restoring the visual integrity of the vehicle and preserving it properly – the way it should have looked from delivery day.
